Selecting Denim for the Product and Target Market
Velden Denim supports fabric selection for straight jeans, denim shorts, denim overalls, flare jeans and other custom denim garments. Available directions include cotton denim, stretch denim, cotton-blend denim, recycled denim and buyer-specified materials, subject to project requirements and material availability.
Fabric should be selected according to the intended fit, garment structure, wash effect, target market and price range. A fabric that works for rigid straight jeans may not provide the stretch recovery required for fitted flare jeans. Likewise, lightweight denim suitable for shorts may not create the structure expected from full-length overalls.
We review the proposed material together with the tech pack, reference sample, order quantity and intended wash before recommending a workable sampling route.
Cotton, Stretch and Cotton-Blend Denim
Cotton denim provides a structured hand feel and is commonly considered for straight-leg, relaxed and vintage-inspired styles. Its final appearance and softness depend on fabric weight, weave and washing requirements.
Stretch denim is more suitable for styles requiring closer fit or improved movement. When reviewing stretch fabric, buyers should consider not only the stretch percentage but also recovery after wear and washing. Poor recovery can affect the knee, hip and waistband areas during use.
Cotton-blend denim can be evaluated when the buyer requires a particular balance of structure, flexibility, hand feel or cost. Recycled denim may also be sourced for suitable projects, but composition, availability, MOQ and supporting documentation must be confirmed for the specific material. Recycled content should not be assumed to include certification unless this is verified before ordering.
Fabric Weight, Hand Feel and Construction
Denim weight affects garment structure, comfort, wash response and sewing requirements. Lightweight materials may be suitable for summer shorts or softer silhouettes, while heavier denim can provide stronger shape and a more structured appearance.

The fabric specification should be reviewed together with the pattern. Rise, thigh allowance, leg shape and finished measurements may need adjustment according to material behavior. Color and Wash Performance
Raw fabric color does not represent the final garment appearance. Washing may change shade, softness, measurements and surface character. Dark rinse, medium blue, faded finishes and colored denim can behave differently depending on the fiber blend and dyeing method.
A physical wash or color reference is preferred when the buyer needs a specific result. Sample review should cover color depth, fading, hand feel, visible wash effects and post-wash measurements.
More complex washes or special colors may require additional sampling and can influence cost, MOQ and production time. The final appearance should be approved through the Wash, Color & Finishing process before bulk production.
Fabric Sampling and Bulk Confirmation
Fabric availability is checked after the product requirements and expected quantity are provided. Stock-supported materials may allow a more flexible starting quantity, while custom composition, color or specially sourced denim may require a higher material minimum.
Customized orders usually start from around 100 pieces per style, but the workable MOQ depends on the selected fabric, color, wash, trims and garment construction. Sample development normally takes around 7–15 days, subject to material availability and processing requirements.
